The QUATUOR INTERNATIONAL DE SAXOPHONES was formed in 2000 and grew out of the idea that the members had known each other for a number of years, yet had rarely performed together. Members hail from France, Japan, Canada and the USA.

They have recently commissioned new works by composers of diverse cultural and national backgrounds including: French composers Roger Boutry and Sylvain Kassap, Belgian Frederic Devreese, Testurosuke Kushida from Japan, and American Carleton Macy. Each year the members meet in different parts of the world to perform together, tour and explore new directions in contemporary music.

They have just released this live performance CD from their recent North American Tour. In the summer of 2009, they performed for the World Saxophone Congress in Bangkok, Thailand with premiers of two new compositions.

Minnesota, USA saxophone virtuoso Richard Dirlam, along with sax star Mark Engebretson and pianist Laura Loewen, bring together a range of lyrical, Dionysian, and flavorful chamber music suitable for both the recital salon and the soul bar. Four baritone saxophones meet in Engebretson’s The Bear, while the title track, She Sings, She Screams, pits alto sax against electronic tape.

Sax aficionados and adventurous listeners alike will appreciate this sweeping collection of 20th Century classics (including Denisov, Charpentier and Constant) and welcome new additions to the repertory, all under expert fingers.

For many years, Mr. Dirlam, along with Marilyn Knudson, have sponsored 1 – 3 saxophone recitals per year. These festive concerts have featured new works, including world premiers, of current living composers. In addition to performances by Richard Dirlam, the SaxoSalons feature other area and visiting saxophonists from around the world.
